Will First Horizon Park host the ACC college baseball tournament?

March 11, 2005

The Atlantic Coast Conference was founded in Greensboro in 1953 and the headquarters remains in the Gate City today. Could Greensboro land the ACC Baseball Tournament? The chances are pretty good but Greensboro could face some stiff competition. Boston's Fenway Park has been thrown in the ring and it is the first time a major league baseball stadium is being considered for the ACC baseball tournament. With the entry of Boston College in the ACC in the upcoming years, it could be important to rotate tournament games closer to schools like Boston College and Miami. But Geographically, Greensboro is the best option because the city is centrally located on the ACC map. Greensboro also has experience in hosting the ACC Men's and Women's basketball tournament at the city's 23,000 seat arena complex. The city has hosted NCAA first and second round games including the NCAA East Coast Regional back in 1998. Further back in time, Greensboro hosted the men's Final Four in 1974. With plans to build the ACC Hall of Champions & Museum in Greensboro, the ACC is building on its presence in the Gate City and its only natural for Greensboro to host the ACC baseball tournament. Leaders in Greensboro will be submitting bids for the tournament for future years.
